Squat and gobble

We stopped in for a late lunch at Squat and Gobble. squat and gobble

The restaurant is Easily accessible from the 71 and other lines running down haight. we enjoyed our food, the environment, and will be back again.

we started by hiking up to buena vista park from Castro and market where we arrived via muni. The hike was steep! We were rewarded with fantastic views of Cole valley and haight ashbury. We headed down toward haight and found a wonderful pocket childrens playground. Riding on the 71 up and down haight we thought buena vista was a small park. Boy, were we wrong. Reminiscent of the switchbacks at the top of kaibab trail in the grand canyon, the park provides an invigorating walk.

When we crested buena vista, headed on down to haight, suffice it to say that those amongst us who weren’t initially hungry were now famished. Squat and gobble was a great spot to land.

Entering from the street we were welcomed with a light, bright main room with seating along the windows on the street, tables down the right and a fun outdoor patio toward the rear. Orders are given deli style to a friendly though somewhat dour lady. The menu is written in chalk in huge chalkboards hung from the ceiling. Gnutella crepes come in many fruitful variations. One dish we tried was the strawberry gnutella crepe. The dish was very generous with lots of strawberries, gnutella and whipped Verne. A tad “messy,” the overall presentation was inviting. The portions were large. The crepe itself was very good. A tad less gnutella may have be requested next time because after a few bites the dish was swimming in hazelnut spread.

We also had the portobello sandwich. As the mushroom aficionado in our group was sharing 0, I take it on good authority the dish was awesome. I can attest that it consisted of several layers of mushroom. Even though it was a very large helping, no to go boxes were needed for that order 🙂

Yours truly enjoyed a three egg omelet with cheddar cheese. It was accompanied by wonderful sourdough toast and pan blackened potatoe slices with lots of Rosemary and thyme. The egg creation was light and airy with just the right amount of cheese.

The runners/ pseudo wait staff were very cheerful and pleasant to talk with. Coffee refills and water can be ordered from the runners, but you get your coffee when placing your order.

We sat by the window and enjoyed watching people walk by. The food was fantastic, the Location was fun and the people were enjoyable.

We’ll be back soon!

Nabewise Dana Point Review

I

really like the look and feel of this website – www.nabewise.com. I must as I posted a review of Dana Point. Hmm… that’s unlike me. Must be San Francisco is already having an effect . . . and I’m still 1500 miles away.

Enrolling in the San Francisco Unified School District Lottery System – How does it work?

Okay, so we are moving to the Bay Area and we have to figure out where to live.  We figure out where to live based upon schools available for my 5 year old daughter.  We are really into school and her education so this is the most important thing.  So, after reviewing the various areas available we settle on either the Walnut Creek area, Marin, or the Sunset area.  Walnut Creek and Marin are easy – where you live determines which school district and school you attend.  With the Sunset area, we will be in the San Francisco Unified School District, which is, shall we say a little more challenging in determining which school we are going to attend.  Bottom line, we can end up attending a school across town, even if we have a perfectly good school across the street.

Starting with the SFUSD website, you are able to open a Guide to Elementary Schools .pdf, very fancy as well, that introduces you to various elementary schools. Of note, the very first stated Strategic Plan goal is “Access and Equity: Make social justice a reality.”

Essentially if you are new to the area here’s the process and link:

1)  Go to the Educational Placement Center (EPC), 555 Franklin Street, Room 100.
2)  Receive assignment to a school based upon availability of openings.
3)  Bring:
a) Parent Guardian Photo ID
b) Proof of birth of child – Birth Certificate or Hospital Record
4)   Proof of Home Address:

  • One to two utility bills from different agencies such as PG&E, water, cable, or scavenger (No cell phone bills will be accepted)
  • Both automobile registration and auto insurance policy (Count as one proof)
  • Homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy
  • Property tax assessment
  • Official letter from a social service/government agency
  • Grant deed, Title of property, rental/lease agreement with property owner’s documentation
  • Section 8 agreements

Elesewhere I found that if you go down to the EPC you can find out real time where there is availability.  I was told that you can, but they won’t give the information out over the phone.  So we will be heading down to the EPC ASAP upon arrival in San Francisco.

I’m a little skeptical of the lottery process but we’ll see.  I’ll post more after we meet with the EPC.

Learnvest raises $12MM with female financial services education

Wow – Techcrunch is reporting that Learnvest raised $12MM by providing a financial services site dedicated to educating women.

Offer educational materials, financial bootcamps and Suze Ormon Mint type feel.

The article says there was a big hole for online destination content providers in this space.

Free riding – financial services

Reading Gigaom by Matthew Ingram which also provides the new FCC report “The Information Needs of Communities: The Changing Media Landscape in a BroadBand Age.”  Journalism is a positive externality b/c people receive and benefit without paying. People say that with the news is available with the sending of a link, or a text or on a website home page, (founding fathers subsidized political journalism with stamps for postage) and we don’t need to seek out information because it will find us.

The same is true with financial services. If society doesn’t need to seek out information because it finds us, then who ever is controlling the message in the marketplace, controls a significant share of the collective thought. If Wall Street is pumping information about doing business a certain way, then there is no counter narrative.

Wow – cognitive aging causes worsening financial decisions after 53 – what about the macro?

Salon article by Andrew Leonard really brings up an interesting issue. If we make poorer financial decisions beyond age 53, what happens when much of the countries wealth is controlled by that same group of people? Humorous thought “But anyone who has attempted to convince his or her grandmother to stop driving will likely quail at the thought of engaging in some similar effort on a national, baby-boomer-size scale. Throw some Tea Party anti-government rage into the mix and, well, maybe it’s best just not to think too much about it.”
